Spring and Summer Travel Ideas: Your Guide to Spain

So you and the girls have finally decided that the trip will make it out of the group chat this year. A million messages and group Facetime later you may still be struggling with your choice of locations, activities, and Instagram-worthy meals. If Spain is not already on your list of dream travel destinations, it will be after this article. Here is a guide to must-see attractions in two of the most exquisite cities: Madrid and Barcelona.

A stroll through the plaza + tapas and wine

You will want to start your adventure with a stroll through the historic Plaza Mayor. The many

restaurants on the Plaza Mayor are great for an afternoon spritz or sangria, just be wary of the ones begging the tourists to come inside, as they may have significantly higher prices!

Next, if you want to try authentic tapas- and I mean standing at the bar, shoulder to shoulder

style- check out La Casa Del Abuelo and order the famous sizzling shrimp, or “gambas al ajillo.” Hungry for more? Check out a tapas tour! Popular travel websites like Viator and TripAdvisor can help you find the perfect guide to bring you the best bites in the city.

Stunning Rooftop Views

Be sure to make a reservation at Ella Sky Bar Madrid for breathtaking views of the city and

delicious cocktails. If you are seated for lunch at the indoor tables, the window view is beautiful, but be sure to ask to see the rooftop after your meal for the best view.

El Retiro Park + The Royal Palace

Next up on your to-do list should be a visit to El Retiro Park Madrid, a stunning park on a lake

filled with boats, beautiful architecture, and even some wildlife (if you’re lucky, you will see the black swans!) Continue your visit with a reserved tour time of the Royal Palace of Madrid, where you will learn more about Spanish history and witness impeccable architecture.

Churros and Chocolate. Non-negotiable!

And lastly, you can not leave Madrid without a stop at the iconic San Gines for churros and

chocolate. While the line is oftentimes out the door, the dedicated staff works fast and the

delicious treats are worth the wait.

Gaudí Galore

When walking the streets of Barcelona, you are guaranteed to see the unique architectural

designs of Antoni Gaudí. Learn more about his life and processes with a visit to Casa Batlló.

While it is definitely worth it to see the outside both during the day and at night, only book the inside tour if you are genuinely interested in listening to the history. Many of the rooms are empty and accompanied by an audio guide, although it does end with a fascinating virtual experience.

You already know I’m going to tell you where the best views of the city are!

Both Park Güell and The Barcelona Edition will provide stunning views of Barcelona. Make a

reservation ahead of time and take a long walk through Park Güell, enjoying the various art

pieces and views. I would recommend going to this before the heat of the day, as there is little shade and some steep inclines. Also, you will want to take a taxi to the entrance, as it rests upon a very steep hill that is much easier to access via the road than on foot.

The Barcelona Edition is a hotel located in the heart of the city that allows all visitors,

even if they are not current guests, to go up to its rooftop bar. Grab a cocktail and enjoy insane 360-degree views of all Barcelona has to offer. Try to go early in the evening or pack your patience, at times there is a wait. Park Güell (left) and The Barcelona Edition rooftop (right)

La Sagrada Familia

Perhaps the most recognizable landmark in the city, La Sagrada Familia is a stunning feat of

architecture, designed again by the historic Gaudí. Be sure to book a tour in advance, and you will listen to an audio of the history of its construction while you gaze upon the intricate designs.

Barcelona Beach

Last, but certainly not least, take a quick metro ride outside of the city center to the coast. With many public beaches, bars, restaurants, and walkways, you won’t want to miss this bustling and beautiful area.

Hopefully, these highlights have inspired you to add Spain to your dream vacation list. So next time you are on the let’s-actually-plan-this-time Facetime call, you will have some solid ideas to present! Need more inspiration? Let this be your sign to book that trip!
