Sober October: Raising a Glass to a Guilt-Free Good Time

Telling people you’re not drinking on a night out? Who knew denying a vodka soda would be such a damper in another party's plans. Let’s face it, being sober in a social situation isn’t always an easy feat. It can make things awkward faster than you can say “seltzer.” Suddenly, rejection gets turned into an interrogation real quick. “Are you sure?” “Well one can’t hurt!” and the classic “You only live once, just have fun!” Every boundary that was once respected is thrown out the window.

But thankfully, we’re in a time where the tide is turning, and more people are getting sober and curious. It’s becoming less taboo and more of a lifestyle choice. And trust me, it doesn’t have to come with a side of guilt or judgment.

I recently experienced this firsthand while celebrating my friend's 23rd birthday. As I sat at dinner (and a few bar counters afterward), I held a cold glass of diet coke, feeling fabulous and completely in control. Now listen, I love a good espresso martini as much as the next chick, but I also love waking up feeling refreshed instead of a hot mess. No blurry memories, no regrettable late-night calories - just me, my friends, and a night full of laughter was what I got to remember the next morning. So, how can we embrace this sober curiosity while still having an unforgettable time?

The Sober Stigma: Time for a Shift

Drinking is similar to the practice of sharing a meal across friends; it’s a common bonding experience among us humans. However, being sober has always carried a negative stigma that keeps people from embracing a life without alcohol. You don’t necessarily need a big rock bottom moment to step back from drinking; sometimes you just need to realize it’s not making you feel good anymore.

If “sober” doesn’t sit well with you, try saying you’re alcohol free or just experimenting. It’s ok to make a boundary, even if it is wth a beverage.

The Bright Side of Sobriety

We’re witnessing a shift in how we view mental health, and it’s time to extend that understanding to sobriety as well. Each person's experience is unique, and the reasons for choosing sobriety vary widely. Highlighting the positives is essential.

Think about it: alcohol not only disrupts your sleep cycle, but only works to elevate your anxiety by having a spotty recollection of the night before. It truly only works against you! Let’s redefine what it means to have a good time on our own terms.

Non-Alcoholic Options: Your New BFFs

The best part? You don’t have to sacrifice your social life. Nowadays, bars are overflowing with amazing non-alcoholic options. Brands like Kin Euphorics, Olipop, and Poppi are leading the charge, proving that you can sip something delicious without the buzz and hangxiety.

Whether it’s Kin’s uplifting concoctions or Olipop’s refreshing, gut-friendly fizz, these drinks are the perfect companion for your next night-out. Plus, there’s nothing wrong with asking the bartender to whip up a fun mocktail - adventure awaits!

Sipping Through Sober October

So, as we dive into Sober October, let’s raise our glasses (non-alcoholic of course) to clarity, connection, and guilt-free fun. The more we celebrate this lifestyle, the less awkward those interrogations will become. It’s about enjoying life fully - no hangovers required.

In the wise words of Billie Eilish, “The only thing you can do is be yourself.” This October, let’s toast to truly living - carrying out our best selves without being under the influence, and stepping out of our comfort zones. Remember, it’s not about what you’re missing; it’s about the vibrant experiences we’re making without a drink in hand. You don’t need to sip to shine. Cheers to a season of living authentically!
