As we grow older, it’s easy to forget the simple joys that once filled our days. The carefree
moments and endless imagination of childhood can feel like distant memories. Today, with
social media and constant distractions, we often find ourselves stressing over the future, and obsessing over everything we think we need to do to "fix" our lives. I know I’ve been there too—feeling lost and unsure of what comes next. In times like these, reconnecting with our inner child can bring back that sense of joy, creativity, and relaxation that often gets lost in adulthood. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed or just want to enjoy life’s simpler moments, it’s time to rediscover those parts of yourself you may have left behind. Here’s a simple three-step guide to help you reconnect with your inner child:
1. Go back to those activities you used to enjoy
Think back to the activities that made you feel happiest as a child. Was it swimming in the pool, drawing with markers on a blank page, or playing outside for hours with friends? These simple activities are sometimes the most fulfilling. When planning out your week, reserve some time to revisit these activities.
Whatever your activity may be, embracing them can help you enjoy a worry-free state like when you were a child. Not only will this help you relax, but it will also bring back a sense of joy that can be comforting and refreshing.
Journal
Journaling isn’t just a great tool for self-reflection; it’s also a way to reconnect with your
childhood self. Take some time to reflect on your past—what were the things that brought you comfort and joy when you were younger?
Here are some prompts you can use for inspiration:
● What were my favorite childhood comfort items?
● Who were my best friends in elementary school, and what did we do together?
● What activities did I feel most passionate about?
Reconnect with music and moviesMusic and movies have the power to transport you back to specific moments in time when you felt pure joy. Take some time to listen to the music you loved as a child and watch movies that used to make you laugh uncontrollably.
Whether it’s a favorite childhood song or an animated movie you used to watch on repeat, these media have the ability to evoke emotions and memories that are deeply rooted in your inner child. This simple act of listening or watching can reignite those feelings of wonder and fun. Want to continue to do things for yourself rather than for other people? here are my favorite articles to do just that.
