When I first started to want to dress more modestly, I was so scared financially (going modest would have to mean buying a brand new wardrobe)…at least, that’s what I thought. Little did I know, you don’t have to toss out everything if you want to dress more modestly.

Here’s a guide on how to dress modestly without breaking the bank.

Adding to Your Closet

You might be thinking that you need to throw out all your clothes and start new. If you have the financial means, I say do whatever you want. But if you’re anything like me, you’re working with a budget. So instead of taking away from your closet, let’s work on adding. You can make an outfit modest with some simple accessories.

Make your clothes work for you, not the other way around!

While making a bottom modest is hard, the tops are incredibly easy. This blue button-up will keep you in fashion and modest. Another easy style choice that would cover the shoulders is a shawl/poncho.

If button-up shirts or shawls/ponchos aren’t your vibe, check out these cardigans. I’m pretty sure I’ve found the exact cardigan the model wears in this photo. If you like a little pop of color, Amazon has a great selection and for a budget-friendly price.

When I first wanted to dress modestly, it was hard to part ways with my crop tops. I didn’t think things through and I threw them away, so take my advice and spare your wallet. Here’s a sweater vest that covers your midriff while still showing off the sleeves of your crop top.

I love a good layering moment! Check out this lace layering top from Natural Life. This layering piece is so versatile and can go with so many cute outfits. I’m a huge fan of layering pieces like this because so many dresses are low cut, so pieces like this makes me feel more confident and comfortable.

I had to add a jean jacket moment in here because the jean jacket will never go out of style. Now, jean jackets can be crazy expensive. Here’s a jean jacket on Amazon that’s under forty dollars (it’s on sale at the moment).

Avoid Overconsumption

Fast fashion has taken hold of our lives. We’re constantly bombarded by a wave of fashion trends and “must haves” that we must-not-have in a few months. I learned this rule from my mom that has helped me in my shopping endeavours: if you think about it after 24 hours, go buy it. If you didn’t think about it 24 hours after you saw it, you don’t want it that badly. Another great article has helpful tips on avoiding overconsumption.

Along with this article, I think everyone should read the “How To Find Your Style And Build A Sustainable Wardrobe Without Going Broke or Losing Your Mind” article. It goes into great tips and pieces of advice that everyone should have.

Accessorize

The best way to spice up any outfit is by accessories. I’m pretty frugal with my money, so I have to jazz up old outfits with some necklaces, hand chains, bracelets, rings, and earrings. If you’re looking for some jewelry sets, here’s a 69 piece jewelry set on Amazon! I also enjoy Pretty Little Thing’s jewelry pieces. They’re pretty inexpensive and always fashionable.

I hope I’ve given some helpful tips and advice on how to make your wardrobe more modest. Before you enjoy the rest of your day, I wanted to share a great quote about modesty that changed my life: modesty is not just about what you wear, it’s about the heart.
