HOW TO LEAVE THE HAIR SALON WITH THE PERFECT HAIRCUT

Updated: Sep 15, 2023

I think we are all guilty of leaving the hair salon in tears at least once in our lives. Whether you didn’t like the way your hair was styled or how short it was cut, we’ve all been there. As much as we want to blame everyone but ourselves, sometimes it comes down to the fact that we just weren’t specific enough with how we wanted it to look. The idea might have been in our heads, but it might not have come out the right way. So, let’s make sure that this literally never happens again. Here is everything you need to say and do to ensure you leave the salon not just “happy” with how your hair looks, but SO obsessed with it that you can’t stop looking in the mirror.

1. Show The Stylist A Picture

When I say “a picture,” I mean JUST one. Honestly, the more pictures the worse things are going to go. The easiest way to achieve the exact look that you are going for is to find an image that you are obsessed with, make sure that it’s exactly what you want, and show that image to your stylist. Ensure that you don’t just like the haircut in the picture because of the pretty person in the picture, the gorgeous color of their hair or the style in the image. You need to be confident in the actual style and cut itself because this is going to be the image that your stylist is going to be basing your cut off of.

2. Know How You Want It Styled

Obviously, you are going to leave the salon upset if you had the idea in your head that you were going to be leaving with beach waves and now your hair is pin-straight. It’s extremely important to tell your stylist exactly how you want your hair styled because this is the key factor in determining whether or not you are going to like the way your hair looks when you leave the salon. If you want curls, be direct with the stylist and make sure she knows how you want your hair to look when it’s time to swipe your credit card, add a tip and head out the door. This will ensure that you are leaving with the look you had in mind when you entered the salon.

3. Take Everything Into Consideration

As harsh as it may sound, it’s extremely important to think about all of the factors that come into play when you get this haircut. It’s probably not a practical decision to ask for a heavily layered haircut that only looks good with a full-round brush blowout if you don’t have time to blow out your hair all of the time. The same thing goes for short hair. Don’t ask for a short haircut if you plan on putting your hair in a ponytail all of the time. That won’t work! Take all of these small things into consideration when choosing the perfect haircut, or else you are going to be quickly disappointed as soon as you leave the salon and hit the real world.

4. Specificity

You. Have. To. Be. Specific.! You might know exactly how you want your haircut to look in your head but unless you spell it out for your hairdresser, they aren’t going to be able to read your thoughts and know what you want. Spell out the color for them, explain exactly how you want the layers and show them exactly where you want the length to be at. The more specific you are able to be, the more likely you are going to leave the salon with a smile on your face. It’s hard to speak up for yourself but if you are able to do so, you are guaranteed to leave satisfied.

5. Express Your Confusion

Again, there’s literally nothing worse than awkward conversations with your stylist about how your hair looks. But, it’s more important than ever to have these conversations while you’re in their chair, rather than after you leave. If you’re confused about why they’re cutting a certain area or applying a certain color, express that confusion! Ask your hair stylist why they are cutting so much off a certain area or curling your hair a certain way. With these questions, you can prevent any mistakes from happening and ensure that you leave with the exact style that you had in mind when you got there.
