Halloween Horrors: The October Canon Event

By:  Lauren Napierkowski

It’s almost that time of year again…no, not the pumpkin carving or caramel apple dipping in the roundup of fall activities. It’s the doomed canon event of October that always sets the trajectory for the remainder of the year. And trust me, no one is spared.

Let’s set the scene: it’s Halloween weekend, or as we like to call it in University, Halloweekend. For some, it’s a single weekend of tomfoolery; for the more dedicated, it’s a multi-week lead-up to the main event. In my experience, the week of Halloween is always a little uneasy. That guy or girl you’re on a talking stage with over Snapchat is full steam ahead - by that, I mean you’ll “accidentally” plan to hit a house party or a bar where they’ll be at. The vibes are immaculate, your girl group has assembled like the Power Rangers of partying, and you’re rocking an outfit compiled from SHEIN or Amazon, ready to show off those Halloween TikTok transitions in real-time. The bar is alive with the buzz of spooky cocktails (tequila and lime, YIKES!) and laughter, but just as you’re ready to dive into the festivities, the universe decides to serve you a piping hot platter of chaos.

This is the annual Halloween catastrophe - an event so iconic it deserves its own trademark. Every year, without fail, something happens that feels like a page ripped straight from a rom-com script. Maybe it’s a situationship imploding in a frat basement, surrounded by strobe lights, fog machines, and the unmistakable smell of jungle juice (if you know, you know). Or perhaps it’s the guy dressed as Will Ferrell’s character in Semi-Pro who stuffed a sock down his shorts to make parts of his costume a bit… larger than life if you know what I mean. Whatever it is, it’s an October canon event, and it’s about to change everything.

Let’s break it down, shall we?

Haunted by the Situationship

You know that feeling when you’re vibing with someone, and the lines of “just friends” start to blur? You’ve spent countless nights talking about your hopes, dreams, and favorite memes, and just as the chemistry peaks, it all comes crashing down. Maybe they FaceTime their ex in the corner of the party, and suddenly, you’re stuck processing your feelings holding a High Noon in the middle of a crowded house - totally not based on personal experiences, of course.

As the chaos unfolds, your friends try to cheer you up, suggesting you drink away the pain - hell, even go for Jack Sparrow over there in the corner. But no amount of spooky punch can mask the feelings of betrayal and confusion. This is the moment when you realize that, despite your best efforts, some Halloween nights are destined for the horror section.

From Frights to Insights

So, what do we do after the October canon event wreaks havoc on our lives? First off, you have to feel all the feelings. Whether you’re drowning your sorrows in alcohol or ending the night in a pile of candy wrappers, it’s all a part of the process. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes (or a ghost in the graveyard), you emerge stronger. You might even consider it a rite of passage - the universe’s way of saying, “Welcome to Adulthood, babe!”

Now you’ve got a story to tell. The next Halloween, you’ll be the one giving advice and learning from your past mistakes. Fear not, those lessons are bound to repeat, so you might as well embrace the good with the bad - or in this case, the tricks with the treats.

Witching Hour Reflections

As the rotten jack-o’-lanterns are tossed aside, the candy goes on sale, and Spirit Halloween shuts down shop for the year, we can take a moment to reflect. Sure, we might have had our heartstrings tugged at, but each October catastrophe is a reminder that life is full of unexpected twists and turns. And just like any classic horror movie, you never quite know what’s around the corner - especially in October.

When it comes time to gear up for another Halloween season, let’s embrace the chaos and jumpscares that come with the inevitable October canon event. After all, the only way to make it out alive is to remember that Halloween isn’t just a time for scares; it’s a reminder that even in the trickiest of times, we can find our way back to ourselves - if only we can survive the night.
