So you’re off to college in the fall, and this is your last summer of being a kid. People say the summer before you leave for college is supposed to be the best time of your life. You’re living every day carefree, and your only worries are having fun and making memories with your friends. The truth is, this summer can also be filled with a roller coaster of emotions. With a big life change on the horizon, you might feel yourself feeling different than what you hear people talking about online. If this is the case, here’s some big sister advice on how to approach this summer.
Feel Your Feelings
whether you’re feeling anxious, excited, terrified, or numb about this new upcoming chapter of your life, know that every feeling is completely valid and okay! the concept of leaving your home, family, friends, and routine can be overwhelming at times, but it’s also such an exciting opportunity for you to grow and learn new things about yourself. Take this summer to feel your feelings, while being intentional with how you align your mindset. If you focus solely on negative emotions, chances are you’re going to have a harder time adjusting to college when the time does come. So do your best to focus on all of the amazing opportunities coming your way. There are so many people to meet, places to go, and memories to make, you have so much to look forward to.
Don't Overthink It
There’s a weird stigma around this summer because it’s technically your last one as “a kid.” Don’t let these outside ideas and thoughts stress you out and pressure you into doing things that don’t feel right! Remember that you are in charge of your life, and you get to decide how you live it! If you want to spend this summer with your family, do it! If you want to go the girlboss route and work or intern, do it! If you want to spend every day with your best friends making memories, do it! There is no “right way” to spend this summer, there is just YOUR way!
Don't Procrastinate
As much as we all fall victim to it, procrastination is never fulfilling in the long run! This summer, hold yourself accountable to avoid procrastinating on all of the essential college preparation! Things like dorm room shopping, school forms and paperwork, class registration, and roommate searching are all so important. You don’t want to spend the end of your summer scrambling to get these done, instead show yourself some love and do them ahead of time, you won’t regret it!
The summer before you go off to college is terrifying, bittersweet, confusing, and also SO EXCITING!!!! you are about to enter such a transformative chapter of your life, get excited!!!
